International Surf Rescue Challenge

27th March 2009 - 29th March 2009

The International Surf Rescue Challenge (ISRC) is a competition between Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, USA, Great Britain and Japan. As the name indicates it is a surf lifesaving event.
The ISRC originally started in 1939 as the Trans Tasman Series; a competition between Australia and New Zealand.
In 1999 South Africa joined the event and the Tri-Nations Challenge was formed. Since 2005 the event include the countries listed in the first paragraph.

The rules of the events are basically the ILS rules with a few amendments taken from the new Australian Sport Manual.

The 2009 International Surf Rescue Challenge is based around a comprehensive competition programme conducted over three tests, which includes swim, surf board, surf ski and beach events. An overall point score will be maintained with the winner being declared the 2009 International Surf Rescue Challenge Champion.

For the participating countries, a separate 2009 International Surfboat Challenge will also be conducted. The events and crews (but not points) will be incorporated into the 2009 International Surf Rescue Challenge Programme. A separate surf boat point score and trophy will be awarded for the winning 2009 Surfboat Challenge Crew.

The Trans Tasman Challenge will be incorporated into the 2009 International Surf Rescue Challenge competition and will continue the tradition of surf life saving competition between Australia and New Zealand that was first commenced in 1937.

The Tri Nations Challenge will also be incorporated into the 2009 International Surf Rescue Challenge competition and will continue the tradition of surf life saving competition between Australia, New Zealand and South Africa that was first commenced in 1999. Traditional trophies will be awarded to the winning team.

The 2009 Trans Tasman Challenge and the 2009 Tri Nations Challenge will be conducted over the same set of events as the 2009 International Surf Rescue Challenge but will also include surfboats in the each of the Tests and the overall point scores.

All teams in the 2009 International Surf Rescue Challenge will be represented by a team of 12 (6 men and 6 women), a team manager and a coach. For the 2009 Trans Tasman and Tri Nations Challenges the Australia, New Zealand and South African competitive team size will be 17 (i.e. 12 competitors plus a surfboat crew of 5).
