After announcing that the 2012 World Lifesaving Championships (Rescue 2012) will be held in Adelaide, South Australia, Surf Life Saving Australia released the dates for the 2012 event.

Rescue 2012 will be held across three venues in Adelaide including Christies Beach, Glenelg Beach and the future state-of-the-art Aquatic Centre at Marion from 4-18 November 2012.

Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) put forward the successful submission submitted by Events South Australia on behalf of the South Australian Government and Surf Life Saving South Australia to the International Life Saving (ILS) Federation which was endorsed in September.

SLSA President and Chairman of Rescue 2012 Ron Rankin AM said "We are very excited to announce the dates for Rescue 2012. Adelaide will provide a great location to showcase the best lifesaving athletes in the world and host a world-class sporting event. This event has the potential to be the largest World Championships ever held".

Rescue 2012 is the largest international lifesaving sport competition in the world and is likely to attract more than 4,000 competitors and officials plus thousands of spectators. For more information, visit: http://rescue2012.com.au/

Fast Facts - Rescue 2012

  • Estimated 4,000 competitors and officials to participate
  • Estimated 40 countries expected to take part
  • The event will run over a two week period (11 days)
  • Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) together with International Life Saving Federation (ILS) will deliver the event, thanks to the support of the South Australian Government
  • Adelaide will provide the ideal venue for Rescue 2012, with events to be held across three venues including Glenelg and Christies beaches and the state-of-the-art Aquatic Centre currently under construction.
  • Glenelg will be the official ‘accommodation hub' of Rescue 2012 and will become the athlete's village and festival location, with the opening and closing ceremonies to be conducted there, with all beach events to be held at twilight.
  • This event will not only form part of Adelaide's strong stable of sporting events, but it also provides a great opportunity for Surf Life Saving to promote lifesaving within the state and country.
