The Mexican Lifeguard Association (MLA) is a non profit membership organisation. To qualify, as regular member of the MLA an individual must be a current member of any federal, state, city or volunteer emergency service (lifeguards, fire fighters, civil protection, military). The membership includes seasonal lifeguards, full time lifeguards, lifeguard supervisors and lifeguard chiefs of most of the states of the Mexican Republic which possess ocean, lakes, dams, rivers or pools.
The mission of the MLA is to promote high standards of lifesaving and water safety education to the public.
In Mexico, tourism is the second source of reception of foreign currencies after the petroleum. Millions of national and foreign tourists enjoy their recreational aquatic areas. International evidence suggests that lifeguard services benefit public safety, and also indirectly provide economic and social benefits.
Despite the evidence, until some years ago, very few Mexican beaches and establishments had a lifeguard service to protect the lives of local residents, national tourists and foreigners that visit them. Some cities organised a volunteer lifeguard service, thanks to the initiative of non government organisations, the support of the same tourists and local businesses. In the best cases, thanks to the will of the local authorities some cities established a municipal lifeguard service.
The Mexican Lifeguard Association became Full Member of ILS on 14 February 2006.
