Instituto de Socorros a Naufragos

The Portuguese Lifesaving Institute was founded in 1892. Since then, 33,000 persons have been rescued, as well as 9,000 boats and 550,000 persons had been helped. It operates all over the Portuguese coast through 32 lifeguard stations. Some of the lifeguards are working for free and some are paid. The members of the society are also active in the saving of victims at the sea.
