Water Safety New Zealand

Water Safety New Zealand (WSNZ), formed in 1949, is the national organisation responsible for ensuring all New Zealanders play safe in the water - whether at home in the pool, at beaches, in lakes, rivers or out at sea.

Its prime focus is to service the needs of its member organisations and to ensure the public are aware of water safety. This is achieved through the WSNZ\'s co-ordination of many varied education programmes that promote water safety.

The WSNZ ensures that water safety needs of the community are met by its member organisations. It does so by providing several key services:

* Public education : maximising awareness of water safety.
* Funding
* Information and statistics
* Research
* Advice and consultancy

The Members of the WSNZ are national organisations who have an interest in water safety and the prevention of drowning. Their core activities reach from rescue orientation to competitive sport through to adventure recreation or the monitoring of legislation. There are currently 17 Full Members and six Associate Members. Surf Life Saving New Zealand, is the ILS Full Member of New Zealand and is also a Full Member of the WSNZ with voting rights.
