Asociacion Costarricense de Guardavidas

The Association groups experienced lifesavers and lifeguards and has been composed in order to organise lifesaving and lifeguarding activities in Costa Rica. The organisation is observing similar goals of ILS and is using its standards.

The ACG believes that being a part of ILS can be an instrument that opens many doors in the country and believes that the main directives of ILS are the right ones. Like all lifeguards, the principal interest is to safeguard life.

In Costa Rica the lifeguards are trained by the Red Cross thanks to internal efforts and volunteers. The private clubs and hotels are recruiting people with no or little knowledge of the profession and they are paying them very low salaries. Moreover they give them additional work like maintenance and cleaning.

Being tired of the abuse we believe that the Association can foster the development of lifesaving and lifeguarding in the country. The Association is still in the middle of a development process but is already legally registered in the country.

The Association became corresponding member of ILS in May 2003 but lost its membership status on 19 September 2006 by non payment of membership fees.
