The Deutsche Lebens-Rettungs-Gesellschaft (DLRG) is the greatest humanitarian water rescue organisation in Germany. Since its foundation on 19 October 1913, it aims at saving people from drowning. Nowadays, the DLRG counts nearly 800,000 members.
The DLRG is the number one organisation in swimming and lifesaving education in Germany.
From 1950 till 2001, the DLRG has carried out nearly 25 million swim examinations and nearly 4 million lifesaver examinations. In roughly 2,200 local clubs the unpaid volunteers carry out roundabout 6 million hours per year for the German public.
The main tasks of the DLRG are:
- Early and continuous public information about dangers by and in the water as well as safety aware behavior.
- Swimmer and self-rescue education.
- Lifesaver and lifeguard education.
- Advanced training of lifeguards for educational and operational services.
- Planning and operating lifeguard services all over Germany, also bound into general public lifeguard-service and civil protection.
