Important Message to all teams and ILS Delegates attending the Lifesaving World Championships 2020 (LWC 2020) – 10th February 2020 – Closure of Bologna airport 16th to 20th September 2020
The ILS and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the LWC 2020 met in Ostia, Rome on 9th and 10th February 2020 to review progress on the organisation of the events in Riccione in September 2020.
Just recently we have become aware that the Bologna Airport, the main international airport for Riccione in northern Italy, will be closed for runway repairs from 00:01am on 16th September to 06.00am on 21st September.
This has presented the ILS and LOC with a huge logistical challenge that will certainly affect all Masters Teams, ILS meeting delegates, and some National Teams who may be intending to arrive during this period.
We are aware that some airlines have already begun cancelling flights due to arrive at Bologna during the repair period. Other airlines may choose to divert their flights to other airports in northern Italy. Not all airlines have yet confirmed their plans to manage their flights during the closure period.
The ILS and LOC has met today with the ORION agency which is responsible for the logistics arrangements for LWC 2020 to discuss the options for meeting teams and delegates and transporting them to Riccione.
It has been agreed with ORION today that teams and delegates arriving during the above period, who would have landed at Bologna, should consider the following alternative options:
- There is a small regional airport at Rimini, close to Riccione. However, not many international flights land here, and those that do will not fly in every day. If a flight can be found to Rimini ORION will arrange the required pickup from that airport. The airport is served by direct flights from London Stansted, Luxembourg, Turin, Munich and Budapest
- There is also a bigger airport at Ancona, which is located 82 km further south from Riccione. This airport is served by direct flights from London Gatwick, London Stansted, Paris, Brussels, Dusselforf and Munich. If possible. teams and delegates can consider rebooking their flights to land at Ancona. ORION will arrange pick-ups and return from Ancona.
- If teams and delegates are not able to land at either Rimini or Ancona, and are forced to change their flights to land at other airports in Northern Italy, such as Venice, Pisa, Florence (Firenze), Milano Malpensa, Milano Bergamo, or into Rome in central Italy they should arrange to make their way by the fast train service from those locations to Bologna Centrale Railway station.
ORION will ensure that they are then picked up there and transported as originally planned to Riccione. Return trips will be arranged to Bologna Railway Station, or to Bologna airport if the return flight is being made from there after the closure period ends.
Teams and delegates that make their way to Bologna Centrale Railway Station for collection will need to advise the time of their train’s arrival and the type of train service used as different trains stop at different areas within the Bologna Centrale Railway Station.
Further information will be provided at a later date regarding the requirements and deadlines for notifying arrival and departure dates and times.
