The 2008 UBD Australian Surf Life Saving Championships will be held at Scarborough Beach from 1 to 6 April 2008.

After 12 years at Kurrawa Beach, Queensland, the Aussies moved to a new home in 2007 in what was a monumental celebration of the Year of the Surf Lifesaver. More than 6,000 surf lifesavers from almost 200 clubs around Australia descended on Scarborough Beach last March to mark the centenary of the formation of Surf Life Saving Australia in 1907.

Along with competitors, around 500 officials and thousands of surf lifesaving enthusiasts are expected to flock to the 2008 UBD Australian Surf Life Saving Championships, making the event the largest of its type in the world.

Aussies 2008 marks the climax of a busy season for surf lifesavers. Clubs and individuals pit themselves against the elements and their peers to prove they are the best rescue and resuscitation outfits, ironmen, swimmers, boat crews, march past teams, ski paddlers, board riders and runners.

This year’s event promises to be better with back-of-beach entertainment and nightlife options for our beach heroes and their thousands of supporters, who basked in Perth’s sunshine last year and enjoyed the wonderful facilities of Scarborough Beach, including its purpose-built amphitheatre designed specifically for this event.

Scarborough Beach is just 14 kilometres north west of Perth and is a playground for any beach enthusiast, forming part of Western Australia’s 14,000km of pristine coastline.

As we saw during Aussies 2007, Scarborough is a very good surfing beach and provides challenging conditions for Australia’s premier surf lifesavers.
