German Life Saving Association

The Deutsche Lebens-Rettungs-Gesellschaft (DLRG) is the greatest humanitarian water rescue organisation in Germany. Since its foundation on 19 October 1913, it aims at saving people from drowning. Nowadays, the DLRG counts above 1,800,000 members and donors. The DLRG is the number one organisation in swimming and lifesaving education in Germany.

From 1950 till 2018, the DLRG has carried out about 27 million swim examinations and about 4,5 million lifesaver examinations. In roughly 2,000 local clubs the unpaid volunteers carry out roundabout 10 million hours per year for the German public.

The main tasks of the DLRG are:

  • Early and continuous public information about dangers by and in the water as
    well as safety aware behavior.
  • Swimmer and self-rescue education
  • Lifesaver and lifeguard education.
  • Advanced training of lifeguards for educational and operational services.
  • Planning and operating lifeguard services all over Germany, also bound into
    general public lifeguard-service and civil protection.
