Asia Pacific Regional Meeting in India

The Rashthriya Lifesaving Society of India ran the successful 2003 ILS Asia Pacific Regional Meeting and Mini Championships at Cidade De Goa, India from 26 until 30 September.

The Meetings were chaired by the Regional President Robert Bradley of RLSS Australia. A constructive day of Board Meetings was followed by presentations at a Regional Seminar by members from Australia, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia and the Commonwealth Secretariat.

A mini Regional Development Lifesaving Championship was held on 29 September consisting of pool events in the morning and beach events in the afternoon with teams competing from Hong Kong, India, Iran and Sri Lanka. The overall winners were the team from Hong Kong. The Championship was well organised and run by Peter Court of RLSS Australia and Gavin Hill of Surf Lifesaving Australia.

These two experienced lifeguards also ran a number of days of intense training in the various events that make up lifesaving as a sport, for those athletes from developing countries. It was the general view of the athletes that they had gained much from the expert guidance they had received from the two Australians.

All the events in Goa were efficiently arranged and managed by Rear Admiral Purushottam Sharma, President of RLSS(I) ably assisted by his Wife Kavita. A large team of volunteers from different regions of India supported these two hard working members of the Indian Society.

Congratulations are due to all those who made the events in Goa such a success.
