Hoping to raise water safety awareness, 11 competitors from UAE hotels, a team from Dubai Municipality and another representing InterContinental Doha vied for honours in the third UAE National Lifeguard Championships 2008 held in Fujairah, UAE, last week.

Thirteen teams took part in the day-long event, which tested the knowledge and skills of lifeguards in the areas of leadership, health, safety and emergency procedures, first aid, teamwork and physical fitness.

These championships are more than just a competition, an ideal platform to raise awareness of water safety and accident prevention and to generate new opportunities for the enhancement of lifeguard training.

The events included this year in the competition were the Triathlon (250m run, 250m swim, 250m run), 400m swim, 90m beach relay, beach rescue, 25m pool casualty relay (all won by InterContinental Doha), 25m obstacle relay and first aid.

InterContinental Doha has scheduled a Lifeguard Competition on June 14. Ten teams will participate, including the UAE Municipality team. The competition will take place on the Hotel’s beach starting from 3pm.
