In Memoriam – Dr Klaus Wilkens, PhD

Bad Nenndorf/Adendorf, Germany – July 2025

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dr Klaus Wilkens PhD, Honorary President of the German Life Saving Association (DLRG) and one of the most influential figures in international lifesaving. He passed away on 15 July 2025, at the age of 82.

Under his leadership, the DLRG became the world’s largest water rescue organisation. Dr Wilkens dedicated his life to drowning prevention and to advancing lifesaving as a global movement. As President of the International Lifesaving Federation of Europe (ILSE) from 1997 to 2012, and briefly President of the International Life Saving Federation (ILS) in 2012, he was a driving force for international cooperation, capacity-building, the promotion of drowning prevention and lifesaving sport around the world.

His legacy lives on in the organisations he helped shape, the partnerships he forged, and the many individuals he mentored and inspired. Among many recognitions, Klaus was Grand Knight in the Order of Lifesaving, inducted into the ILS Hall of Fame and honoured as an ILS Honorary Life Member.

We are deeply grateful for his vision, leadership, and lifelong dedication to the lifesaving mission. His memory will continue to inspire future generations.

Our heartfelt condolences go to his family and loved ones.
Dear Klaus, rest in peace.
