The lifesaving community is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of ILS Vice-President and President of the Asia-Pacific region, John Baker AM ESM.
John was President of Surf Life Saving Australia since 2021, and gave 14 years of dedicated service on the National Board. A proud and active patrolling member of his beloved Brighton Surf Life Saving Club for more than 40 years, he also served as President of Surf Life Saving South Australia for a decade.
The ILS President, Graham Ford AO, reflected that John’s sudden passing is a profound loss to our lifesaving community. He was a passionate lifesaver and a dedicated advocate for drowning prevention, water safety, rescue operations, and lifesaving sports. Above all, he was a great friend and colleague, and he will be deeply missed by the worldwide lifesaving family.
John was a much-loved member of the lifesaving community, whose leadership, dedication, and friendship have left an enduring legacy.
Our heartfelt thoughts are with his wife, family, and friends at this difficult time.
