Regional history
In 1994, the Asian and Oceanian Full Members of ILS agreed to establish a regional branch to support closer relationships and collaboration in aquatic lifesaving across Asia and Oceania. The branch was initially known as ILS Asia/Oceania.
In 1996, the regional constitution adopted the name ILS Asia-Pacific Region, abbreviated as ILS-AP.
The earlier Asia Pacific Life Saving Council
Before ILS Asia-Pacific was formed, the Royal Life Saving Society established the Asia Pacific Life Saving Council in 1978. Its members promoted water safety and lifesaving methods and organised biennial conferences and competitions around the region.
The Council was disbanded in 1998 in favour of the ILS Asia-Pacific Regional Branch.
