Ever since the development of the surf reel in 1907, surf lifesavers in Australia have been at the forefront of rescue tools and techniques which saved many lives around the world. SLSA recently recognised some of the latest developments, through the prestigious SLSA Innovation Awards’:

Standard aquatic signage manual: this picture-based manual uses international symbols and also contains information on installation requirements and the prioritisation of sign-based messages. SLSA has adopted the manual as national best practice.

Feathered flag identification system: SLS Queensland developed a new, more visible signage system featuring large vertical flags attached below standard red and yellow patrol flags. The concept proved very successful in creating an additional visual indicator for a safe swimming area. SLSA has endorsed the system as part of best practice for identification of safe swimming areas.

Bone mike helmet: designed to cut out all background noise and usable underwater, the GeoComms bone mike helmet was developed in New Zealand and adapted for use in surf life saving. This innovation will significantly improve communication with power craft operators in emergency situations.

Emergency Response Point (ERP): able to be placed in remote, dangerous locations these beacons can be activated by the public in an event of an emergency to call for rapid response by SLS personnel. The ERP uses radio and GPS technology and is the first mobile system of its type.

Nipper Safe: is a member protection strategy designed to increase child protection within Surf Life Saving. Developed in South Australia, phase 1 is an educational VD presentation for any club members involved with children, giving them the tools to identify children at risk.
