10 years of drowning prevention in Brasil

In 2005 the Brazilian Lifesaving Society Sobrasa has completed its first 10 years working in drowning prevention.

Sobrasa reported their most important accomplishments in 2005:

  • 123 lectures on prevention and procedures on drowning.
  • 4 professional pool lifeguard courses
  • 8 lifesaving basic lifesaving courses for surfers
  • New virtual lifesaving museum
  • New lifesaving T-shirt museum
  • 210 MB of new information on lifesaving website www.sobrasa.org
  • 9 book chapters on drowning (national and international).

    • 11 invitations to present papers in Medical congresses (national and international)
    • Contribution to International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) 2005 Consensus on ECC & CPR Science and Treatment Recommendations
    • A representative from Sobrasa elected to the Board of Director of International Lifesaving Federation
    • A new national program to evaluate the quality of pool safety
    • Two papers on drowning were published and indexed to Medline system.
    • Foundation of Latin-American Lifesaving Sport Federation – FLASAD ” to increase lifesaving sports beyond American Countries (first 5 countries are Argentina, Brazil, Espain, Italy and Venezuela)
    • Colaboration in 9 chapters in a landmark edition “Hand Book on Drowning – Prevention, Rescue, Treatment”, Bierens, Joost J.L.M. (Ed.) – Springer.
    • 580 new Sobrasa members associates.
    • New Lifeguarding Certification Program
    • Great improvement to have the final approval of a new law recognizing Lifeguard as a professional and the obligation to have at least one lifeguard in each public pool.

    The excellent year 2005 was closed by the the successful “Brazilian Lifesaving V Championship, II South American and IV Simposium – Tramandái ” Rio Grande do Sul – Brazil with the presence of 11 countries (Brazil, Argentina, Portugal, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Spain, Equator, Uruguay, Paraguay, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic).

    A day after the competition there was rescue by an International team during a beach tour, which resulted in saving two lives.
