One of TrygFondens significant non-profit activities is Surf Lifesaving Denmark (SLSD) which was established in 1998. Today SLSD has lifeguard service on 34 locations (beaches/harbour bath) in Denmark. SLSD train the lifeguards within the scoop of the ILS standards. Further SLSD provide the Danish municipalities with water safety advise and risk assessments on beaches, harbour baths and all kinds of locations at water in urban areas, and SLSD also offer guidance in creating safe areas by water in terms of new constructions and residential areas. SLSD’s Lifeguard Patrol tours the country teaching children lifesaving and make them familiar with the safety at water.
Besides TrygFonden hands out for free life buoys and rescue ladders in regards raising the level of water safety and prevent drowning accidents. SLSD is facilitating a playful approach to obtaining lifesaving skills through activities in pools, as well.
The concept is made up of a miniature version of the wellknown SLSD lifeguard Tower, packed with LG equipment in juniorsizes, accompanied with comprehensive exercise manual and inspirations. This initiative is aimed at all users of public pools; school swimming lessons, clubs and public attendance and is rolled out in 72 of Denmark’s most busy indoor facilities as of 2025.
This is to underline the vision of lifesaving skills are for everyone.
Next step is to work with the schools to have lifesaving as a part of their curriculum in the swimming education in primary school. We have lately seen a growth of lifesaving clubs in Denmark. Most of these clubs are founded by lifeguards that is or have been a part of our lifeguard service. We are currently supporting the clubs with equipment; and the clubs are now seen providing lifeguarding duties at various occasions – eg. Triathlon-meets.
