European Junior Champs in Poland

The Polish Life Saving Federation will host the 2004 European Junior Life Saving Championships in Sopot and Gdynia from 6-8 August.

Gdynia, situated in the central part of the coast together with Gdansk and Sopot, creates an agglomeration called Trójmiasto (Triple City), which is an extremely popular site for many holiday makers in summertime.

Gdansk, the greatest of the cities, has a unique old town and an important freight harbor. The history of the city runs back to the Middle Ages when in the year 980 a small village was founded in the delta of Vistula river.

Gdynia, limited from the west side with the harbor and from the east side with beautiful cliff beaches, is a centre of the polish ship building industry and a headquarters of the Polish Navy. Gdynia and its surroundings are perfect for all the nature and sport lovers and the coast in the vicinity of a big city bustling with life and the serenity of golden beaches washed by the Baltic Sea.

Sopot is situated in between Gdansk and Gdynia and was a Polish spa resort. It is well known for the national and international events which take place here every year, such as the international tennis tournament and the festival of the Polish Song. In Sopot there is also the oldest polish wooden pier.

Many buildings of the 19th century’s architecture show the evidence of the city’s history as one of the first Polish summer resorts. In the summer peak even white beaches of Sopot are crowded by tourists from the whole country and from abroad.

The pool events will take place at the Naval Academy in an open air Olympic swimming pool. The construction of the place does not allow however to set the European records. This place will be available for the competitors to enter for the training purposes on the 4th and 5th of August and throughout the time of the competition i.e. the 6th – 7th of August.

The open water events will take place on the Main Beach in Sopot close to the historical wooden pier.
