The 7th ILS World Lifesaving Championships for Interclub Teams was won by the Queensland Team of Kawana Waters after exciting pool and beach competitions in Geelong and Lorne last week.

Kawana Waters SLSC finished on top in the overall ranking with 411 points, after a strong performance in the new pool at Kardinia Aquatic Centre and some stand-out individual and team performances on the beach in Lorne.

A remarkable development is that six of the top ten place-getters were non-Australian clubs, compared to only four at Rescue 2004. This demonstrates that lifesaving sports is also becoming increasingly competitive outside Australia.

During the Interclub competitions a new world record was set in the 200m Swimming with obstacles event by an Australian athlete from Kurrawa SLSC, Meagan Nay, in a fantastic time of 2’0998.

Thanks to a generous sponsorship arrangement with international freight and logistics company, DHL, nine developing lifesaving nations attended the event, learning valuable skills, including new coaching techniques.

The final Interclub Overall Pointscore was:

1. Kawana Waters 411
2. Northcliffe 382
3. Port Hacking 310
4. DLRG Halle-Saalkreis 282
5. Durban Surf 260
6. Bulli 255
7. Alcarreno de Salvamento 253
8. DLRG Berlin-Lichtenberg 229
9. Entente Nautique Albigeoise 176
10. Maroochydore 176
