New ILS Flood Course Prepares Lifeguards for Crisis Response

As floods increase in frequency and intensity across the globe, the International Lifesaving Federation (ILS) is stepping up with a groundbreaking initiative: the Life Saving Academy Flood Course which is set to debut at the World Conference on Drowning Prevention (WCDP) in Egypt this November.

Held over two days from 18–19 November 2025, the course will bring together global experts in flood rescue, disaster logistics, crisis management, and community resilience. It’s designed for ILS members, NGOs, and government representatives who are in responsible roles in flood mitigation and response, or those interested in taking these roles in the future.

“Lifesaving organizations are often called in to support flood response efforts, but flood rescues present different challenges to those that emerge on the beach or in our waterways,” said Dr Joost Bierens MD PhD MCPM, Dean of the ILS Lifesaving Academy.

“Our goal is to help lifeguard organizations realise their full potential in this emerging domain and to ensure other agencies understand how to harness the unique capabilities lifesaving organizations bring to flood response.”

What to Expect

The course will cover four key priorities and feature a diverse lineup of expert speakers drawn from across the globe.

  • Understanding flood disasters and the responses needed
  • Managing flood risks, including health components and mitigation strategies
  • The role of flood rescue organisations
  • Lifesaving organisations and communities: linking locally and nationally
