Everything you need to know about Lifesaving at The World Games 2025

Lifesaving will make a splash at The World Games 2025 in Chengdu, China. It’s bringing elite international competition and aquatic heroism together in one of the most exciting sports of the Games.

Combining speed, skill, and rescue techniques, lifesaving is a test of real-world readiness, with athletes simulating emergency scenarios in pool-based events.

1. When is lifesaving happening at The World Games?

Lifesaving competitions will take place at the 8 – 9 August, during the first week of The World Games.

2. Where will the events take place?

The Chengdu Sport University Sancha Lake Campus Natatorium will host the pool lifesaving events. 

3. What lifesaving sport events are contested at The World Games?

Athletes will compete in events such as manikin carry, super lifesaver, rescue medley, and different relays.

4. Who’s competing?

Top athletes from 13 countries will compete, including powerhouse teams from Australia, Germany, France, New Zealand, and Japan. Look out for stars like Nina Holt (Germany) and Matt Davis (AUS) and Ferus Eadie (New Zealand) who’ve dominated recent world championships.

5. How do the events work?

Events are split into individual and team formats, each scored based on time, technique, and task completion. Manikin-based races challenge swimmers to “rescue” weighted dummies, while relays require coordination and fast transitions.

Yes! All lifesaving events will be live streamed for free right here on the International Lifesaving Federation website, or tune in on The World Games 2025 streaming app and website. 

7. Why is lifesaving at The World Games?

Lifesaving isn’t part of the Olympics (yet), but it’s one of The World Games’ most important disciplines. It showcases the vital link between sport and public safety, giving athletes a stage to show off life-preserving skills at a global level.

8. What’s new in 2025?

This year’s edition includes a new mixed-gender team rescue relay, promoting gender equity and team strategy. The indoor beach simulation also debuts for the first time in a major international event.
